Pacific Telecommunications Conference
10 – 11 July 2008, Apia
Telecommunications is playing a crucial role in social and economic development throughout the world. In recognition of this fact, Pacific governments are in the process of liberalizing their telecommunications sector with a view to taking advantage of the possibilities it offers.
This conference will address the many issues surrounding development of telecommunications across the Pacific region. In particular it will focus on the economic and regulatory aspects of this development, including the effects that technological advances will have on the regulatory framework.
The telecommunication sectors of Pacific island countries have reached various degrees of development and privatisation. The impacts of these changes in telecommunications will also be addressed in comparisons between the Pacific island countries and with similar countries from other regions.
The Crawford School of the Australian National University and the Samoan Ministry of Communications and Information Technology are hosts to the conference, which is held in conjunction with the publication of the Pacific Economic Bulletin (PEB), the leading journal on Pacific economies. The papers presented at the conference will be published in a special issue of the PEB: the third issue for 2008.
