Topic title and description:

Economic analysis of air pollution impacts from on-road mobile source on health risks in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area.

Jakarta Metropolitan Area’s (JMA) air is heavily polluted, leading to very poor ambient air quality. Air pollution is generated by every sector that uses energy, including the on-road transportation sector. This sector emits a number of primary pollutants: carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and particulate matter (PM10). Of these primary pollutants, some will transform into secondary pollutants; for instance NOx and SOx form PM10. The air pollution and its negative impacts have been recognised and addressed by the development of air pollution control policies for every sector, including the on-road transportation sector. Effective policies will bring net benefits to the society when compared to conditions before they were implemented. To measure the net benefits of having new air pollution control policies, the benefits of having cleaner air need to be identified. Therefore, the primary objectives of this research are to model the relationships between the transportation sector, pollution and health impacts and to estimate the benefits of having cleaner ambient air for JMA citizens. The specific research questions are: (1) what is the contribution of on-road mobile sources to air pollution, represented by concentration of PM10, in JMA?; (2) what impacts do PM10 haS on human health?; and (3) what values do JMA citizens have for lowering health risks resulting from the decrease of air pollution concentration?
