Personal information

I was born and raised in Ballarat, Victoria, before moving to Melbourne to study at Monash University. I graduated in 1987 (BA Combined Honours, History and Politics) before joining The Herald (Melbourne's afternoon newspaper) in January 1988. In 1991 I took a year off work to travel, arriving in Britain during one of its coldest winters for decades. After three weeks I left for the sun and heat of Africa, spending three months traveling through Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, where I enjoyed gin and tonics on the verandah and caught malaria. On return to Britain I worked in Cambridge, pulling beers at night and working on a deer and horse stud during the day. I visited Spain, Italy and Spain before returning to Australia via Canada and the United States.
Over the years I have traveled extensively, including to Nepal and India (1989), Bali and Lombok (1996), Greece and France (1999), Hong Kong (2001), Vietnam (2002) and Indonesia (2003).
My travels reflect my great interest in the East Asia region, and Australia's place within it.
My other main interests are triathlons, mountain biking, Australian Rules Football, rogaining and visiting the pub (not necessarily in that order).
