I was born and raised in Ballarat, Victoria, before moving to Melbourne to study at Monash University. I graduated in 1987 (BA Combined Honours, History and Politics) before joining The Herald (Melbourne's afternoon newspaper) in January 1988. In 1991 I took a year off work to travel, arriving in Britain during one of its coldest winters for decades. After three weeks I left for the sun and heat of Africa, spending three months traveling through Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, where I enjoyed gin and tonics on the verandah and caught malaria. On return to Britain I worked in Cambridge, pulling beers at night and working on a deer and horse stud during the day. I visited Spain, Italy and Spain before returning to Australia via Canada and the United States.
