Alumni Events

Message from Crawford School…

We welcome the opportunity to meet our alumni outside Canberra. The Japan Australia Forum and the evening events in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos brought back so many great memories and further strengthened our ties.  Reunion with our alumni is an important part of our activities and we hope to be able to meet many more of you next time.  If you have not given us your contact details for future correspondence or if your contact details recently changed, please submit the information by filling the online form or email  Billie Headon, billie.headon@anu.edu.au.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Indonesia Alumni Event, Wednesday 15 July, Jakarta

An Australian National University’s Alumni Dinner, was hosted by Sue Farrow, Gina Abarquez and Lynn Toohey at the lovely Bunga Rampai Restaurant in Jakarta on Wednesday 15 July 2009.

The successful dinner, funded by the ANU Alumni Office, was enjoyed by approximately 65 alumni, university staff and invited guests. The night could not have been held without the wonderful help from the Crawford School Indonesian Alumni Representatives, Milda Irhamni and Rima Artha. A broad range of disciplines across the University were represented as well as almost three decades of graduates, with the newest arriving in Jakarta just the week previously.

Thanks to everyone who attended and spread the word about a similar alumni event again next year! Please enjoy the photos taken by Prasaja Widiatmaka on the night.

Mongolia Alumni Dinner, Friday 15 August, Ulaanbaatar

An Alumni Dinner, hosted by Brian Arnold of the Crawford School, was held in the Grand Khaan Irish Pub in Ulaanbaatar on Friday evening 15 August 2008. Seven of our past students attended. It was the day after Mongolia won their first ever Olympic Gold medal. As there was a TV in the room, at the request of some of the alumni, we switched the TV on just long enough to watch a Mongolian boxer’s fight in one of the early rounds of competition.

Several other alumni had replied to the invitation but were not able to join us as they were travelling or working in other countries at the time.

October 4, Rikkyo University, Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

Prof Jeff Bennett visited Tokyo in early October and took the opportunity to meet with members of the ANU Alumni at a function hosted at Rikkyo University and organized by Prof Toshiya Ozaki. A group of around 20 ex-ANU people enjoyed the chance to meet and mix.  Before the social function, Jeff addressed a group of Rikkyo students who are interested in studying at ANU as well as meeting senior academics of the university. Earlier in the day, Jeff had meetings with representatives of Waseda University, Tokyo University as well as Tokyo Electric Power Company to explore potential collaboration with ANU.

Tokyo

Monday 21 May 2007 at the International House of Japan.

The ANU, the University’s Japan Alumni, and the Australian Embassy in Tokyo co-hosted two events in Tokyo to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Australia-Japan Agreement on Commerce.  The Crawford School helped organise the functions, and School Dean Prof Andrew MacIntyre, Professor Emeritus Peter Drysdale, and Australia-Japan Research Centre Executive Director, Prof Jenny Corbett, were in attendance.

More than 160 academics, business people, local ANU Alumni and government officials met during the afternoon to discuss “The Australia-Japan Relationship: Past and Future”. The proceedings are recorded here. (LINK) The forum was followed by an Alumni Reception with 250 guests who enjoyed the unique opportunity to meet and renew contact with senior ANU academics, businesspeople from both countries, and government leaders. ANU Vice Chanceller Prof Ian Chubb presided over proceedings.

Many Japan-based alumni from the Crawford School attended the events.
