Current Interests
- My research interest is in evaluating and documenting the different ways in which man-made environment can affect the behaviour of firms and of individuals. I am particularly interested in the unintended consequences of tax systems in inducing firms to behave in ways that we would think suboptimal. For instance, I have examined the responses of firms to eligibility thresholds in the context of the value-added tax in Japan, finding that the sizable number of firms separately incorporated business segments for tax purposes in reaction to the Japanese tax reform of 1989. My current projects include: (1) the effects of banking regulations on small business lending in Japan and in US. (2) The role of a class registration rule on student learning. (3) A market consequence of tariff evasion.
