Current Research Projects
Janine is engaged in a multi-year project with the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) and the Secretaries Group to provide strategic and operational advice on the design and implementation of the APS-wide performance management framework to support the key recommendations of the Ahead of the Game Blueprint for Reform of Australian Government Administration. This will involve investigating innovative approaches internationally, working with the APSC Strategic Centre for Leadership, Learning and Development to design the learning and development strategy to develop capabilities to effectively manage performance in the Australian Public Service, and devising the principles, strategy and framework for the new model.
Janine was recently Chief Investigator on two Australian Research Council funded Linkage Projects. The first examined experiments with joined-up government in Australia and involved six Commonwealth government organisations. Key themes in the project included: inter-organisational collaboration, horizontal and vertical coordination, incentive structures, organisational culture, and leadership. The second project examined trust, competition and control in the new generation employment services model in Australia and involved collaboration with peak bodies and providers in the disability employment services market.
She is currently completing two books. The first, co-authored with John Alford for Palgrave (due for publication early 2012), considers how government organisations work with external providers in service delivery and covers the full range of contributors (from clients, volunteers and regulatees through to private, non-profit and other government organisations) and the various modes of engagement (from collaboration and contracts through to co-production). The second examines the international experience with working across boundaries in public management and policy and will be published late 2012 early 2013 by Routledge.
