Rio Tinto-ANU China Partnership
Features of the Partnership
The Rio Tinto Chair in the Chinese Economy is held by Professor Yiping Huang. Professor Huang is a globally recognised expert in the Chinese economy.
Professor Huang is the chief Asia economist for Citi Global Markets Asia, based in Hong Kong. He has a direct role in briefing Rio Tinto and is jointly responsible for developing the research agenda of the Rio Tinto China Advisory Panel.
Prior to taking up his position with Citi, Professor Huang was Director of the China Economy Program at the Australian National University.
ANU, through The Crawford School of Economics and Government , will offer a number of Rio Tinto Graduate Scholarships for students to work in policy areas on the Chinese economy, resource economics and international trade.
Scholarships will be offered on a competitive basis to outstanding students from Australia and overseas at the Master and PhD level. Up to three students will be engaged on Rio Tinto scholarships in any given year.
Linked with the Rio Tinto Graduate Scholarship Program, The Crawford School of Economics and Government will establish an internship program under which Rio Tinto scholarship-holders and other students will be considered for work experience with Rio Tinto. These internships will typically be for periods between one and three months.
The Crawford School of Economics and Government will design and implement short-term training courses on the Chinese economy, energy and resource trade for Rio Tinto executives.
The Partnership provides for periodic briefings on research findings to better inform Rio Tinto’s Australia-based operations about current developments in China.
In August 2007, the Rio Tinto - ANU China Partnership released the report China's Resources Demand at the 'Turning Point'. This report summarises the findings of Garnaut, Song and colleagues, on the question of the 'Turning Point'. The findings inform, but do not necessarily reflect the views of Rio Tinto.
This report has been prepared for distribution to managers in Rio Tinto who seek a deeper understanding of developments in China, the challenges of the resources boom and China's 'Turning Point'.
High-level expert advice will be provided through Rio Tinto’s China Advisory Panel, a dedicated panel of international experts specifically designed to inform Rio Tinto headquarters.
