The AJRC has been the Australian think tank invited to participate in the design and establishment of the Economic Research Institute of ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). The AJRC is a member of the ERIA Experts Group, comprising representatives of think tanks from 16 countries, and is participating in ERIA's first major research project, "Developing a Roadmap Towards East Asian Economic Integration" and in a second project on "Services Liberalisation in East Asia" as part of the project on Deepening Economic Integration.
ERIA was first proposed by Japan at the 2nd East Asia Summit in January 2007 and its establishment was agreed at the Third East Asia Summit held on 21 November 2007 in Singapore.
ERIA is envisaged as a unique, policy-oriented research institution focused on enhancing East Asia’s wider economic integration. Located in ASEAN, it will be able to support ASEAN and East Asian policymakers in policy analysis and capacity building. Initially, it is working on projects under three pillars: the first pillar, deepening integration, centres on ways in which we can strengthen trade facilitation and bring down barriers to ensure continued growth in the region. The second pillar, narrowing development gaps, ensures that integration will benefit all stakeholders. The third pillar, sustainable economic growth, encompasses research in the fields of energy, environment and poverty reduction which is crucial to the continued success of the region.
