NEW APPOINTMENT CONTINUES CRAWFORD LEGACY AT ANU
19 November 2009
Professor Tom Kompas has been appointed Director of the Crawford School of Economics and Government at The Australian National University.
His appointment follows an international search to replace the former Director of the Crawford School, Professor Andrew MacIntyre. Prior to this appointment, Professor Kompas served as a Deputy Director for the Crawford School.
ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said that the appointment of Professor Kompas was testament to the depth of talent at ANU. “Tom has proven himself to be an exceptional researcher, teacher and academic leader and is held in high esteem by his colleagues,” he said.
Former Director of the Crawford School, Professor MacIntyre said that Professor Kompas brings with him to his new role a portfolio of academic expertise and achievements which will help ensure that the University continues to lead the research, teaching and professional training of public policy and economics within Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
“Tom has the lot – he’s a highly accomplished researcher, an inspired teacher and communicator and one of those scholars who is able to translate his ideas in ways that have major impact in the policy world,” said MacIntyre.
“Winning the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement is powerful testimony to the technical rigour and policy significance for Tom’s work. And to top it off, in the same year, he is also the recipient of the University’s highest award for teaching, the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.”
Professor Kompas is also the founding Director of the Australian Centre for Biosecurity and Environmental Economics at ANU, editor of the Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Senior Research Economist at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics.
Professor Kompas will commence his role as Director of the Crawford School of Economics and Government immediately
