ANU, in conjunction with the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, hosted the 33rd Pacific Trade and Development (PAFTAD) Conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The Conference is organised every 18 months by the International Secretariat, which is based in the Crawford School of Economics and Government.

Since its inception in 1968 the PAFTAD conference series has established itself as one of the leading sources of ideas and discussion on issues affecting economic development in the Asia Pacific. A private organisation with no formal government ties, PAFTAD has been, and continues to be, a driving force for ideas about policy innovation and development at both the national and regional levels.

The theme this year was "The Politics and the Economics of Integration in Asia and the Pacific" and brought together around 50 leading thinkers from around the world to discuss papers relevant to the theme, which will be published in to a book in 2010.

ANU was represented by Dr. Philippa Dee, Emeritus Professor Peter Drysdale and Research Fellow Shiro Armstrong presenting a paper focussing on the structure of trade and investment flows in Asia and the Pacific in contract with the trade flows in other parts of the world, such as Europe.
