Seizing the Moment: APEC 2010 & 2011
(APEC - Roundtable)
The Australian National University in conjunction with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, and the Keizai Doyukai co-hosted a private Roundtable and public forum on October 1 2009, in Tokyo featuring leading thinkers and opinion leaders from throughout the region to discuss “Seizing the Moment: APEC 2010 and 2011.”
With Singapore hosting the APEC Leaders’ Meeting this year and Japan and the United States hosting APEC for the subsequent years of 2010 and 2011, the Roundtable provided the opportunity to assess APEC’s progress on its core agenda and to forge a strategy for the next few years.
Since its founding in 1989, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum has grown to
include 21 countries representing over a third of the world’s population, nearly 60 percent of the
world’s GDP, and nearly half of global trade volume. APEC has continued to pursue a core agenda
of trade and investment liberalization with the aim of promoting economic growth. However, in
recent years members of APEC have recognized the importance of regional cooperation on issues
such as sustainable development, climate change, and inclusive growth.
