Understanding Economic Growth for Non-economists
Course AimsWith the huge disparities that exist between rich and poor countries, understanding what makes a country rich and how to achieve sustainable wealth are perhaps two of the largest economic challenges. This course will use recent international development and growth research to provide important insights into the type of policy needed to reduce these inequalities and improve the fortunes of developing countries. This course will focus on giving participants a broad understanding of the fundamental principles of economic growth and determining the principal constraints to improving economic performance. Of Relevance toThis course is intended for Individuals and organizations interested in economic growth, development and aid to developing countries. Prior training in economics is not required. Course OutlineCourse components will include the following topics: Understanding economic growth, Capital Accumulation and Economic growth, the Power of Productivity. Growth and Globalization and the Barriers to Riches. These topics will provide participants with an understanding of the issues of economic growth, the meaning of economic development, the determinants of economic growth, physical accumulation as an engine of growth, the contribution of human capital to growth, understanding productivity, the case for freer trade and the importance of institutions. The ConvenersProfessor Quentin Grafton has published over 50 journal articles, and has strong interests in economic growth and productivity. Professor Grafton is the Director of Economic Development, Growth Economics and Sustainability at the Crawford School of Economics and Government. Dr Tom Kompas is a leader in both research and policy formulation in the field of agricultural and resource economics. He has over 30 professional papers and technical reports published, and is currently Director of the International and Development Economics Program at the Crawford school of Economics and Government. He is associate editor of the Australian Journal of Agriculture and Resource Economics. |
