LAFIA Pacific 2007
Overview
Given Australia’s comprehensive relationships with Papua New Guinea, LAFIA Pacific will again visit Papua New Guinea in 2007. Papua New Guinea is the Pacific’s largest and most populous nation replete with natural resources and rich tribal and ethnic diversity. You will visit Port Moresby and other significant centres outside the capital.
In Vanuatu, you will meet business government and community leaders and engage in frank roundtable discussion that will highlight the particular challenges and opportunities facing Australia’s engagement. Vanuatu is a proudly independent, conservative nation which has benefited from implementing economic reforms and has attracted significant Australian tourism and private investment; set to overtake Fiji as the Pacific’s tourism hub if present trends continue.
In Samoa, the multifaceted opportunities and challenges facing Australian engagement will be further underscored. Samoa overcame early economic woes and natural disasters to achieve stability through a relatively authoritarian but just system of government; its recent economic progress also provides a compelling contrast with the other states of the Pacific although population pressures remain a challenge to sustainable growth.
LAFIA 2007 will be the third in the LAFIA Pacific series drawing on twelve successful years of the LAFIA program. Senior Executive Band 3 and Band 2 staff (Deputy Secretary and First Assistant Secretary levels) from Commonwealth, State and Territory governments are invited to participate.
The facilitator engaged in this year’s program will be Bob Cotton.Your Outcomes
